Stuff Like That Band - About

Many artists capture your ear; only one captures your heart. From early beginnings in local clubs to our current high-end events, we have captivated audiences with prolific and energetic performances. Since 1990, our entertainment has grasped audiences locally, regionally, and nationally. We are a musical expression in live band sound who generate a magnetic response, impelling all to dance and swing in harmony. Though our focus has always been on cover and dance live band entertainment, we emulate anything from classic old school songs to today's award-winning hits.

We are Stuff Like That Cover and Dance Band. Our masterfully artistic leader and featured artist, Bobby J, serves a largely satistied client base. Giving consideration to the target audience, he orchestrates our shows, and adds dimension by personalizing each show and freely interchanging staff .

We have experienced entertaining for and with the best. We were the opening or closing act to Gladys Knight, Billy Preston, Larry Graham, Kool and the Gang, Usher, Ashford and Simpson, The Pointer Sisters, Pieces of a Dream, and New Orleans own Aaron Neville and the Neville Brothers and Irma Thomas.

Our entertainment, though based in New Orleans, LA, is not limited to this region. We have performed at venues like the Avenue Park Hotel in Toronto, Canada; the SanDestin Resort Hilton Hotel and the Jackson Hole Ski Resort. We have provided entertainment for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, BET Network, NOBLE, the Leukemia Foundation, The Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force, Multiple Sclerosis Society of LA, Bridge House of New Orleans, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Crimestoppers, WWL 870 AM Radio Station, the Bayou Classic's Gala with Tom Joyner, and more

Our key staff* includes Takashi on lead guitar, Tim on bass guitar, Jevon on keyboards, and Ruffin on drums. We are currently working on a collaboration of old school favorites, adding a few originals, simply entitled "Journey".  It's been a long time coming, but its expected release is mid 2012.

One thing is certain about our entertainment...whether performing or rehearsing, ours is always a personal experience.

*We contract multiple artists and musicians to meet client music requests and needs. We have special musicians for Concerts, Parties, Dance Music, and Shows. We reserve the right to substitute performers at management's discretion.

About Bobby J

My soul is reflected in my entertainment. I wake up in the morning thinking music and I retire the exact same way. Music is my life.”

Singing since the tender age of 5 and determined to be a drummer at age 12, Robert ‘Bobby J’ Jordan applied himself to the art of entertainment. In the beginning, he worked with phenomenal New Orleans' local talents like Sammy Berfect, Branford Marsalis, Cyril Neville, Charles Moore and Terry Manuel, to name a few. Upon graduation from high school, he was awarded a music scholarship to Southern University at New Orleans. There he received formal classroom instruction from the renown Kidd Jordan. It was around that time that Billy Preston expressed interest, or should we say invited Bobby J, to join his entourage. But family members, because of his young age, rejected the offer.

While working to complete his education and playing drums with a local band called Cool Enterprise, he was privileged to tour with Frankie Beverly and Maze. After leaving Cool Enterprise (was a lead vocalist at that time), he joined the Louisiana Purchase Band. He then recorded as lead vocalist on Every Time You Go Away, Baby Come Back, and Ain't No Woman Like My Baby under the management of radio station WYLD. While with the Purchase, he worked alongside the Temptations and the Chi-Lites. I will never forget Ali Ollie Woodson (Treat Her Like A Lady) joining me on stage in Toronto, Canada at the Avenue Park Hotel to sing Every Time You Go Away. The hilarious thing was that a video was captured of the performance, but when I returned home to show the family, there was no audio. Fortunately, I have the memory; the video and pictures were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.”

He remained with the Purchase for several years, until his decision to pursue a solo career. He recalls his first solo performance: “...my stomach was in knots. But I remembered an older musician telling me years before that when your stomach stops knotting up, you've become overly confident. With reservations, he stepped out on faith, naming his first entity 'Bobby J and Company'. He tried employing the most experienced musicians but quickly realized that the experience wasn't what he needed...the desire to work cohesively was the priority. He then turned to locals who shared his vision.

Early on, he learned to value and love his art. They say that experience is the best teacher and with opportunities to tour and perform with such artists like the Temps, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Ashford and Simpson, The Pointer Sisters, Chuck Mangione, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Billy Preston, Michael Henderson, Larry Graham, Peabo Bryson, D. J. Rogers, Kool and the Gang, The Drifters, Pieces of A Dream, Usher, Raheim DeVaughn, Aaron Neville, and Irma Thomas, I gained a great advantage over many.”

Even though his work remains uncelebrated around the globe, he celebrates those who influenced him- Maurice White, Ali Ollie Woodson, Jeffery Osborne, Donny Hathaway, Lou Rawls, Michael McDonald, James Ingram and David Ruffin. Though now primarily working the secular field, he’s never strayed from his roots in gospel music. He plays drums for his church choir and offers his voice in praise and worship. In 2001, he received the "Gospel Is Alive" Award from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, Inc. in recognition of his "enthusiasm, dedication, and contribution to gospel music".

In 2005, by special request of Quint Davis (Founder and Organizer), his entity, now Stuff Like That Band, was a Jazz Fest performer in the Paddock...a performance that will always be a cherished memory. He had begun a solo recording project prior to Hurricane Katrina that was halted as a result of the devastation. Currently, he is working on a new product that he hopes to release by mid 2012.

I have encountered many obstacles; yet, I continually profess my many blessings. I pray that GOD continues to grant me the strength and energy to use my raspy tenor voice and other talents. Whenever or wherever I perform, you best believe, I give my best to reach my goal - to brighten someone's day in song.”
